Popularity Contests

May 25, 2008 · 2 Comments

Elections tend not to be very important in primary education, rather just heartbreaking to the participants who lose. What feels like an extremely long time ago, I competed in an election for the President of the Student Council at my school. I was a long shot; I definitely couldn’t have been described as popular, but more comedic yet introverted. I was running against quite a few others; a best friend, a secret enemy, a literally insane vocalist,  an annoying perfectionist, and a clearly unmemorable candidate. Needless to say, it was a tough race. I gave it my all and exposed a lot about my personality. I made posters that killed way too many trees. I said hello to everyone, which was something I’d never have done otherwise. I wrote a speech that told everyone that I’d been politically involved since I was nine-years-old, that I was inspired by my father, and that I’d fallen in love with my school and I’d be the best President imaginable. I lost the race. Moreover, I lost the race to my secret enemy, a girl with virtually no perspective, no personality, and no real drive to win. My heart was broken for days, and I cried and cried and cried because I deserved it. I deserved to win and she didn’t. That was what I believed. However, I soon learned that life moved on. I was not going to die just because I lost a stupid election. Despite my temporary distortion, what I learned to do because of the election was write songs, play the piano from my heart, and know that I didn’t have to be running for president to be a nice person. Coincidentally, I’ve been nominated for a citizenship award!

What makes me revisit this topic is that I recently witnessed an election that I couldn’t vote in, which was eerily entertaining. What I’ve learned is that history often repeats itself, which actually brings me to my discussion topic about popularity contests:

Because they are such *controversial* issues, and because I’ll be gone next week, I would like readers to participate in this conversation. Do you believe in popularity contests? If so, tell why and what leads you to this belief. If not, do the same. Either way, are they really integral to living successful or failing lives? Comment below.

Washing this ton: Summertime

May 25, 2008 · 1 Comment

So, I’m gonna be in Washington next week, so no blogs. Sorry everyone. There’s a slight possibility I’ll just post all of my posts today and tomorrow, but that chance is very slim. But during the week of June 2nd, the blog is back in full swing! This means we’ll have listen to this, crazier than me, and video of the day segments back on track for the summer, during my staycation, as well as some new segments! Peace, punch, Captain Crunch!

I’m a skeptic about Jason Mraz covers anyway, but this guy did an amazing job. His percussion was absolutely fantastic. I was tickled pink when I listened to this. So good.

DAVID COOK WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

David Cook won, everybody. I never thought I would see the day, but yes! Both contestants were great and had amazing voices, but David Cook was just more lax and relatable that Archie. Both are awesome, but David Cook prevailed!

Finals: Day Two

Halfway home, and stressed enough. Tomorrow is Spanish, and I’m not looking forward to it. Can’t write much, but all I can say is that Spanish is the last of many, and I can’t wait ’till it’s over.
